Extend the compound slightly beyond the patch edges — about 2 inches on each side — and smooth it as flat as possible. Let this coat dry completely (typically 24 hours) before proceeding.

Warning: Applying compound too thickly causes shrinkage cracks as it dries. Thin coats — no more than 1/8 inch per pass — produce far better results.

Sand, apply a second coat, and repeat

Once the first coat is bone dry, lightly sand with 120-grit sandpaper to knock down ridges and tool marks. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply a second coat, feathering the edges outward 4–6 inches from the patch to help it blend. Most repairs need two to three coats total. After the final coat, finish with 220-grit sandpaper for a silky-smooth surface.

Match the texture and prime before painting

If your walls have texture — orange peel, knockdown, or skip trowel — recreate it before priming. Practice the technique on cardboard first. Light orange peel texture can be replicated with a texture spray can; knockdown requires dabbing thinned compound with a sponge and lightly flattening the peaks. Once texture is dry, apply one coat of PVA drywall primer before painting to prevent 'flashing.'

Getting a Finish That Blends Invisibly

Once your repair is primed and the primer is dry, paint the patched area with the same sheen and color as the surrounding wall. Whenever possible, paint from corner to corner rather than just over the patch — this blends the new paint into the existing finish and eliminates visible edges.
